How to best utilize 18 acres of land in the heart of Palo Cedro has become the question and the quest for this outstanding non-profit organization. To evolve, to build upon, and improve is the mantra that the Palo Cedro Park’s Board of Directors has adopted over the years as the park has become a reality. Many don’t realize, but the park has no connection with the country or its resources. Everything that happens in the park is made possible through fundraising or donations, so we thank you so much for buying a meal or bidding at the auction to support this slice of paradise.
The Palo Cedro Park has come a long way from the original overgrown groves and empty fields so there is excitement as we continue to work on the plans made years ago to create a beautiful space that all can enjoy. The park has more than you know! It currently includes a fully fenced perimeter of its 18 acres, Electricity, Water,Two gates - the main gate to the north and the smaller gate to the south, A commercial-grade playground complete with play structures, swings, and tables, A commercial-sized shade structure (Courtesy of the Eagle Scouts), A fully fenced half-size basketball court (Courtesy of the Eagle Scouts), Horse Shoe Pits (Courtesy of the Eagle Scouts), A commercial-grade steel bridge connecting the north portion of the park to the south portion (Courtesy of the Eagle Scouts), BBQ Pits (Courtesy of the Eagle Scouts), An event pavilion, An Armed forces memorial honoring the ones who serve our great country (Courtesy of the Eagle Scouts), Nine-hole disc golf course, Various memorial benches to honor great local citizens of the past, and a clever bike shaped bike rack (Donated by the Shasta Wheelmen). All of these completed projects were made possible by caring citizens, the Park itself, and local organizations who share in the vision of making the Palo Cedro Park one of the safest, most enjoyable spots in Shasta County. Their support is unmeasurable and is always greatly appreciated.
There is so much more to accomplish! Did you know the park is slated for a community center? Yes, it’s in the original plans. However, our next project is bathrooms…with flushable toilets! The families who use the park have made this a top request. Other projects that are in the works and could be accomplished with your help, include the paving of the south parking lot, a Pump track - bicycle track that is accessible to riders of all skills and can be used by scooters, skateboards and accessible to wheelchairs, Grading and landscaping for the new event pavilion, Harmony Park (a dedicated spot for various outdoor musical instruments), A full makeover/maintenance plan for the entire walking trail, and A community center/facility. Plans have already been drawn up for the bathrooms and parking lot. However, the others are still in the beginning stages.
Lastly, what are the ongoing needs of the Park? Excellent question! The Park is always looking for new Board members and fresh ideas. We also need volunteers with fundraising knowledge, astute organizational backgrounds, Grant writers, Contractors and Volunteers to help with the maintenance of the Park on a weekly/monthly basis. We are also always in need of Volunteers for the various fundraisers that exist to help keep the Park going strong.
As a reminder, the Park itself is a non-profit organization, run by a volunteer-based Board of Directors who gather on the second Thursday of each month. The park is a constant in an ever-changing world, and the rewards of seeing the enjoyment it brings to our communities is invaluable.
